SIL is changing from 1 July 2026
From 1 July 2026, all Supported Independent Living (SIL) providers will need to be registered with the NDIS to deliver SIL supports. If you’re currently in SIL, this change may affect your current provider and the options available to you. This article explains what’s changing, what it means for you, and what to start doing now.
What is Supported Independent Living (SIL)?
Supported Independent Living (SIL) is an NDIS support that helps with day-to-day tasks so you can live as independently as possible. This can include support with:
- Personal care
- Cooking and daily routines
- Building independence skills
SIL is usually delivered in a shared home or apartment setting, with support available throughout the day.
What is changing on 1 July 2026
From 1 July, all SIL providers must be NDIS registered to deliver Supported Independent Living supports. This means:
- Only NDIS registered providers can deliver SIL
- Providers must meet national quality and safety standards
- There is stronger oversight across SIL services
If a provider is not registered, they won’t be able to continue delivering SIL supports under the NDIS.
Why is the NDIS making this change?
The change is designed to improve consistency and quality across SIL supports. NDIS registration requires providers to meet standards in:
- Quality and safety
- Participant safeguards
- Service delivery
- Accountability
For participants and families, this creates a clearer benchmark for what to expect from a SIL provider.
What do the SIL changes mean for you?
If you’re currently receiving SIL supports, it’s worth checking how this change affects your situation. You may need to:
- Confirm if your current provider will be registered
- Understand if your supports will continue as they are
- Review alternative SIL providers if needed
Some people won’t need to make any changes. Others may need to explore new options before 1 July.
What to do now
There’s time to prepare before the changes come into effect. Starting early can help you avoid disruption and make a more informed decision. You can start by:
- Speaking with your current provider about their registration status
- Talking to your support coordinator (if you have one)
- Reviewing your current living arrangements
- Exploring other SIL providers if you're unsure
Taking the time now gives you more control over what happens next.
What to look for in a SIL provider
From 1 July, working with a registered provider will be essential. But registration is only one part of the decision. It’s also important to consider:
- Your level of independence and privacy
- The type of home or apartment you’re living in
- How support fits around your routine
- Flexibility and choice in your day-to-day life
- Whether the environment feels like a real home
SIL is not just about support. It’s about how you live.
Reviewing your SIL options
If you’re unsure about your current provider or want to explore alternatives, now is a good time to start looking. You don’t need to rush, but having a clear understanding of your options will make the transition easier if changes are needed.
